Cement Shipments Jump 6% in May

Total shipments of portland and blended cement, including imports, in the United States and Puerto Rico in May 2022 were an estimated 9.7 million metric tons (Mt), a 6.0% increase from shipments in May 2021, according to the latest USGS Mineral Industry Survey. Shipments for the year through May totaled an estimated 41.6 Mt, an increase of 3.2% from those for the same period in 2021. 

The leading producing states for portland and blended cement in May were, in descending order, Texas, California, Missouri, Florida and Michigan; these states accounted for 39% of cement produced. The leading cement-consuming states (Texas, California, Florida, Illinois and Ohio) received 39% of May shipments.

Masonry cement shipments totaled an estimated 223,000 metric tons (t) for the month, an 11% increase from those in May 2021. Shipments for the year through May totaled an estimated 1.0 Mt, an increase of 4.9% from those for the same period in 2021. The leading masonry cement-consuming states in May were, in descending order, Florida, Texas, Tennessee, Georgia, North Carolina and California; these states received 61% of May shipments.

Clinker production, excluding Puerto Rico, totaled an estimated 7.0 Mt in May, a decrease of 3.6% from production in May 2021. Production for the year through May totaled an estimated 30.1 Mt, a slight increase from the same period in 2021. The leading clinker-producing states in May 2022 were, in descending order, Texas, Missouri, California, Florida and Pennsylvania; these states accounted for 49% of May clinker production.
